His role at Cognizant has been divided between three directors handling intellectual property, commercial contracting, and compliance work.

“The biggest appeal for me in joining [SAM] was the tremendous opportunity to start their Chennai office,” Bhushan told India Business Law Journal. “It is not often that such reputed firms decide to expand their operations and enter new markets and I’m excited to be a crucial part of this journey.”

SAM will start with a 12-member team in Chennai for the first six to 12 months. Bhushan said the vision was to build a core team focusing on private equity, M&A, general corporate work, intellectual property, technology, real estate and litigation.

“We are delighted that Anand is joining us,” said SAM’s executive chairman, Shardul Shroff. “He brings with him tremendous knowledge of legal issues in the technology sector and special contracts besides his skills in managing a vast legal department. We look forward to him strengthening our technology practice. I am confident he will be a big asset to the firm.”

Bhushan’s appointment takes the firm to 85 partners.
