Reed Smith’s India group was established in 2000. Basu replaces Roy Montague-Jones, who along with Bhattacharyya, headed the firm’s India practice for nine years following its merger with Richards Butler in 2007. Jones left Reed Smith in the summer and told India Business Law Journal he was enjoying a sabbatical.
Basu joined the firm in 2012 and was elected as partner in 2014. He is dual qualified in England and India and has worked on a number of cross-border India-related transactions.
“We have a long-standing commitment to India, to our clients based there and our India-related business,” said Bhattacharyya. “I am delighted to have Ranajoy alongside me.”
Basu said he was “very excited to jointly lead the India group” and looked forward to “growing our transactional offering for clients who are looking at opportunities in the rapidly growing Indian markets”.
