Norton Rose is blazing a trail with law firm acquisitions in pursuit of global expansion. In June it absorbed Canadian firm Ogilvy Renault and South African firm Deneys Reitz, creating one of the 10 largest legal practices in the world with over 2,600 lawyers across 39 offices. Macleod Dixon will join its fold on 1 January 2012.

Macleod Dixon has over 250 professionals in seven offices in Canada, Latin America, Russia and Kazakhstan. Its key practice areas are business law, commercial real estate, energy and resources, litigation, mining, securities, tax and technology.

With Macleod Dixon, Norton Rose will be one of the five largest international legal practices, with approximately 2,900 lawyers in 43 offices throughout Europe, Asia Pacific, Canada, Africa, Central Asia, the Middle East and Latin America.

Its Canadian presence will rival the country’s largest practices as it climbs to around 700 lawyers in Calgary, Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa and Quebec and boosts its mining, commodities, resources and infrastructure practices.

“This is about creating a new Canadian powerhouse,” said John Coleman, managing partner of Norton Rose OR [Ogilvy Renault].

“Our decision to merge was the result of a detailed strategic review,” said Bill Tuer, the managing partner of Macleod Dixon. “Joining Norton Rose Canada is a major global step in serving our clients through a broader and more sophisticated international practice.”

Coleman will be the managing partner of Norton Rose Canada and Tuer will join the executive committee of Norton Rose Canada.
