International legal media have reported that the Australian law firm Mallesons Stephen Jaques has entered into discussions with King & Wood about a possible alliance.
The alliance may take the form of a Swiss Verein, a legal structure that does not require registration in order to have a separate legal personality.
According to David Olsson, a Mallesons partner in Beijing and a member of China Business Law Journal’s editorial board, the firm is exploring “various options” with a range of law firms in Asia and internationally.

“All law firms are trying to keep options open at the moment – the world is moving fast,” he commented.
China Business Law Journal understands that a link arrangement between King & Wood and Gilbert + Tobin, another Australian firm, is no longer in operation.
