Cravath Swaine & Moore recently lost one of its leading India experts when partner Tim Massad was named chief counsel for the Troubled Assets Relief Program at the US Department of the Treasury.

“It is tough to see Tim to go, but it is a great opportunity for him,” said fellow partner Philip Boeckman.

Massad joined Cravath in 1984 and became a partner in 1992. His practice focused on corporate finance and general corporate representation. Massad was co-manager of Cravath’s Hong Kong office from 1998 to 2002 and also worked in the firm’s London office. He recently served as special legal adviser to the Congressional Oversight Panel for Economic Stabilization.

In his new role, Massad will help implement the US Treasury’s Financial Stability Plan, which is intended to lay the foundation for economic recovery. As chief counsel, his tasks include helping to structure the various initiatives the treasury undertakes, implementing them from a legal standpoint, and overseeing other legal matters related to the operation.

Cravath’s presiding partner Evan Chesler said: “We are very excited for Tim as he takes on this important position that will put him at the heart of the government’s efforts to repair the US financial system. He is joining a long line of Cravath partners who have taken on important public service roles over the years.”

“I was honoured to be asked to serve the Treasury in this capacity,” Massad told India Business Law Journal. “Although I was quite happy as a partner at Cravath, I felt this was an opportunity I could not and should not decline in light of the extraordinary times we are living in. In just a couple of weeks on the job, it is clear it will be a challenging and interesting assignment.”
