China has voiced strong opposition to the European Union’s imposition last month of both anti-subsidy and anti-dumping duties on imports of coated paper from China.
The EU announced the duties on 14 May, alleging that cheap finance extended by Chinese banks to Chinese paper manufacturers amounted to a subsidy conferring an unfair advantage in international markets. “This is the first time we have ever put in place measures against the strategic and targeted subsidization of a specific industry by the Chinese government,” said John Clancy, trade spokesman for the European Commission.
Coated paper is typically used in the production of high-quality, glossy magazines and brochures. The anti-subsidy duties will range from 4% to 12% and the anti-dumping duties will range from 8% to 35.1%.
