Stuart Popham, a senior partner of Clifford Chance, travelled with British prime minister Gordon Brown on his January visit to China and India as the sole representative of the legal profession.

Brown’s delegation included representatives of various industries and business groups, who met with top officials and local business leaders during the trip. Included among the delegation of 25 business representatives was the business minister, John Hutton, Virgin boss Richard Branson and Confederation of British Industry chief Richard Lambert. The aim of the trip was to discuss trade and environment issues. The delegation met government officials and business contacts to discuss how to open the way for further cooperation between India and China and the UK.
Popham, who is known to openly support the opening up of India’s legal market to foreign firms, is believed to have raised the issue during his meetings in New Delhi.
Last November the Bar Council of India issued a joint resolution with the state bar councils urging the government to keep foreign lawyers out.
