Indian law firm Khaitan & Co is to host a UK-qualified lawyer from international firm Eversheds on a three-month secondment. Eversheds associate Sandip Khroud will join Khaitan & Co in September, dividing his time between the Indian firm’s Mumbai and New Delhi offices.
Khaitan & Co’s managing partner Haigreve Khaitan told India Business Law Journal: “This is not the first time Khaitan & Co is welcoming a secondment. As part of the HR exercise it’s a usual practice for the firm to offer seats and send lawyers for secondment.
“In the recent past we have had secondees from firms like Shadbolt, Berwin Leighton Paisner and Travers Smith, to name a few. As part of this year’s secondment programme we are also looking to have several more across our offices from other UK and US firms. This is the first one from Eversheds.”

In anticipation of legal market liberalization in India, programmes such as this are being used increasingly to bridge the gap between Indian law firms and their international counterparts.
Many Indian law firms have played host to secondees and interns, sharing ideas on knowledge processes, transactional methodology and general work ethos, and aiming to improve law firm management, facilitate greater cultural understanding and enhance the client advisory capabilities of both firms.
“The purpose is for the secondee and the international firm to get to know about the Indian market and build their Indian practice,” Khaitan added.
