The organiser of this year’s Hong Kong Arbitration Charity Ball is seeking more funds to help the disabled and support Hong Kong’s development as Asia’s arbitration centre. Organiser Gavin Denton told China Business Law Journal he hoped the ball, held annually as part of the Hong Kong Arbitration Week, would raise HK$1 million (US$130,000) this year from the 400 or so from the arbitration community in attendance.

“This year the majority of the money raised (75%) will go to Sailability Hong Kong,” said Denton, the head of Arbitration Chambers Hong Kong and also a member of China Business Law Journal’s editorial board.
Sailability Hong Kong seeks to provide facilities and expertise for sailing experience for Hong Kong people with a disability. “The rest (25%) will go to whoever comes up with the best way to develop and promote Hong Kong as the leading place for international arbitration in Asia. The HK Arbitration Charity Ball committee has called for proposals from the community and the winner will be announced on the night,” he said.
The charity ball raised HK$800,000 at last year’s event, with HK$600,000 of that donated to the Society for Community Organisation. “The remainder (HK$200,000) was donated to the Vis East Moot, which is using it to train law students about arbitration and dispute resolution in developing countries around Asia, and to promote Hong Kong as a hub for international arbitration,” Denton said.
