TVS Motor Company, India’s third-biggest motorcycle manufacturer, in October filed a suit against its competitor Bajaj Auto for defamation over a patent rights dispute.
TVS, which hired New-Delhi-based law firm Dua Associates to act on its behalf, filed a US$63 million defamation suit in the Bombay High Court.
Bajaj, India’s second-largest motorbike maker, had earlier accused TVS of violating its intellectual property after TVS unveiled its new motorbike, Flame, in August. Bajaj insists TVS used the same digital twin-spark technology it had patented in 2002.

TVS has called it a “malicious attempt to tarnish the fair name of the TVS group”.
The Flame motorbike is key to TVS’ growth. The company has seen its sales drop for seven straight months, hit by fierce competition and higher interest rates.
