This year a total of 46 essays were submitted from 17 colleges all over India. Last year Kachwaha & Partners received 68 submissions. Sumeet Kachwaha, the managing partner of Kachwaha & Partners, said that although there were fewer entries this year, “the quality of the contribution was exceptionally good and it took us several rounds of assessment before we could finalize the winners”.
Essays of 3,500-4,500 words, submitted by 20 June, were evaluated by the firm’s partners on the basis of original thinking, grasp of the subject, writing skills and choice of topic.
Kabra received ₹100,000 (US$1,600) for her essay, which explored whether class arbitration was a desirable development.
Pankti Vohra, a student from National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS) in Kolkata, placed second, picking up a prize of ₹75,000 for her essay on online international commercial arbitration and the regulatory framework governing it.
The third prize of ₹50,000 went to Vikrant Shetty of Mumbai’s Government Law College, whose essay looked at bringing cases of fraud within the ambit of arbitration as a way to minimize judicial intervention and efficiently resolve disputes.
Three finalists – Anagh Sengupta of NUJS, Aonkan Ghosh at Gujarat National Law University, and Tarun Krishna Kumar of National Law School of India University in Bangalore – received ₹10,000 each in addition to a book prize.
Another three students – Balu Nair of NUJS, Jagdish John Menezes of NALSAR (a finalist last year) and Shruti Raina of Symbiosis Law School in Pune – received honourable mentions and book prizes for their contributions.
