Mahalingam moves to the firm from Omidyar Network, a Silicon Valley investment firm established by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar. At Omidyar Network, he has worked on venture transactions in India, Southeast Asia and Africa with a focus on consumer internet and mobile, financial inclusion and education. He was a partner at Amarchand Mangaldas until 2011 and had worked at its Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad offices.

Shardul Shroff, SAM’s executive chairman, said Mahalingam would bring “tremendous knowledge of investing in startups and in the VC sector” and that his joining would “significantly strengthen our offering to that market”.

Mahalingam said he was “excited” to join SAM and help the firm establish its Bangalore practice and south India presence. “Apart from the work with local clients, we look forward to strengthening our relationships with investors and the entrepreneurial community,” he said. “There are fabulous lawyers in our various offices working on venture capital and emerging companies and we look forward to creating a strong national platform.
