Dear Sir,
I have read the article in the October 2008 issue of India Business Law Journal giving details and analysis of the legal fees charged by different law firms in India.
It gives us an interesting perspective of the fees that our competitors are charging.
The article also provides important information to clients of Indian law firms. I’m sure it will greatly assist them in the process of selecting a law firm.

I am myself a practising lawyer in India. Our firm’s motto is to give value for the work we do for our clients.
While it is certainly a commendable initiative, there is a danger that publishing the fees of different law firms could mislead some clients.
It is likely that clients may be persuaded to use a certain law firm because of its competitive billing rates, but if the quality of work provided by that firm is not of a high enough standard, the clients may end up paying more money in the long run.
What is most important is that while publishing law firms’ fees, the efficiency of such firms should also be reflected.
I believe that as the legal market matures, it will be good for in-house counsel to have more information on the billing rates of law firms.
This will be especially important when international law firms are allowed to practise in India. They will have to compete in the same market as domestic firms even though they are accustomed to charging much higher fees in their home countries.
Finally, I would like to suggest that you verify the rates claimed by some of the firms that participated in your survey. It seems to me that several of them may have inflated their rates.
