A survey by European law firm Taylor Wessing has highlighted India’s poor record of protecting and enforcing intellectual property rights.

The results put India in 19th place out of 22 countries surveyed. Accompanying India at the bottom of the list were Brazil (20), Russia (21), and China (22). The UK was ranked first, the US second and Germany third.
In compiling its Global Intellectual Property Index (GIPI), Wessing used statistical analysis to rank jurisdictions in terms of patent, trademark, and copyright protection. The GIPI compares jurisdictions in terms of their ability to protect and enforce intellectual property rights.
“IP law is developing rapidly in order to meet the challenges of the ever increasing change in technology and no jurisdiction can afford to be complacent about how its legal system accommodates these changes,” said Michael Frawley, managing partner at Taylor Wessing.
