The development of wind power in India has come a long way since Pandian Chemicals launched the first project in March 1990 – a 0.25mw wind power project at Kattadimalai, Tamil Nadu.

Seventeen years later, India is the fourth largest wind power producer in the world. The country has current capacity in excess of 6,700mw and it is growing larger every year.

By some estimates, India could eventually use wind power to generate more than 45,000mw.

The early development of wind power projects and the increased capacity was largely spurred by income-tax incentives. These incentives encouraged high-net-worth and high-profile individuals like stars from Bollywood and wealthy cricket players to invest in such projects.

Next month Akshay Jaitly and Nishant Beniwal will look at the practical aspects of setting up a wind power project. Trilegal is a full service law firm with offices in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad.
