Zhonglun W&D Law Firm and Hong Kong law firm PC Woo & Co obtained official approval in late January for the establishment of a joint venture law firm in Shenzhen’s pilot economic zone, Qianhai. Based on years of co-operation, the two firms signed a memorandum of understanding on the joint venture in October 2015, after exchanging views and preparing for more than a year. They finally got an official permit for setting up the new firm 40 days after submitting their application.

At least nine joint venture law firms have been set up in the three pilot districts in Guangdong province – Shenzhen’s Qianhai, Guangzhou’s Nansha and Zhuhai’s Hengqin – after the Ministry of Justice adopted measures in 2014 to allow law firms from the mainland, Hong Kong and Macau to set up joint venture firms in those regions.
Zhonglun W&D is the one of the biggest law firms based in Beijing, with more than 500 professionals, while the 71-year-old PC Woo & Co is the oldest law firm set up by Chinese in Hong Kong.
