The Indian Corporate Counsel Association (ICCA) organized an international conference titled Resurgent India: Opportunities for Indian Legal Sector and Professionals on 21 March 2016 in New Delhi, in collaboration with India’s Department of Commerce and Department of Legal Affairs.

The conference provided a platform for discussion on the regulatory mechanisms of various countries, and comprised sessions on opportunities for India in international trade and legal services, as well as discussion on a regulatory framework for the opening up of India’s legal sector. It was addressed by eminent personalities from Indian and foreign law firms, the Australian Law Council and leading academic faculties.
The initiative was part of government efforts to promote India’s trade in services. The Department of Legal Affairs and the Bar Council of India are taking steps to gradually liberalize the legal services sector to increase its competitiveness.

The Indian Corporate Counsel Association (ICCA) says that Indian lawyers are increasingly being faced with transactions involving multiple jurisdictions. The demand for lawyers to be involved in foreign jurisdictions often comes from corporate clients who conduct business across borders and choose to rely on professionals familiar with their business.
The ICCA provides a unique knowledge sharing and networking forum that aims to bring together general counsel and legal officers from India’s corporate sector, and is partnering with the government to reach out to in-house lawyers as part of the globalization of India’s legal profession. The ICCA is also a member of Asia Pacific Corporate Counsel Alliance (APCCA), a federation of the corporate counsel associations of Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and Sri Lanka.
