Arun Madhu, a principal associate at Phoenix Legal in Mumbai, left the firm in early July to join Nexus Venture Partners as general counsel.

Nexus Venture Partners is an Indian venture capital fund with offices in Mumbai and California’s Silicon Valley. The fund has invested in over 40 companies in the technology, internet, media, consumer and business services sectors. This is the first time it has appointed its own general counsel.

“I’ve always been interested in a role which offers greater ownership and responsibility on transactions,” Madhu told India Business Law Journal. “The role at Nexus will not only allow me to look at the big picture along with the details but will also give me a chance to be a part of the entire investment life cycle.”

Madhu has advised a variety of Indian and foreign clients on investments, M&A, and banking and securities laws. He has significant transactional experience with venture capital and private equity funds and has also advised entrepreneurs and companies on investments and exits.

He previously worked at Trilegal and joined Phoenix Legal when the firm was formed by three ex-Trilegal partners and a former Kochhar & Co partner in 2008.

“Arun is a good lawyer with a strong commercial mind,” said Sawant Singh, one of the founding partners of the firm. “He was quite keen to experience the business side and made a choice. We will miss him and wish him the very best.”
