Putting 50 ladies on an island-bound boat is not your typical conference for International Women’s Day, but the Singapore Corporate Counsel Association (SCCA) conference proved the perfect ice breaker for participants.

The 15 March event, dubbed the WILL (Women In-house Living Life) Summit by SCCA executive director Mel Nirmala, allowed the 50 corporate ladies to bask in a variety of enrichment activities that aimed to not only create an impact on their professional development, but to enhance their personal attributes as well.
The day began with breakfast on a luxurious catamaran, which was co-sponsored by Colin Ng & Partners, Eagles Wings and the SCCA. The women then sailed in style to Lazarus Island for a Tai Chi session and a personal branding workshop.

Tai Chi and legal work has a lot in common, some of the ladies observed. Tai Chi teaches how to embrace an opponent while keeping them at bay and strengthening your own abilities. The balancing act that the women performed while trying the famous “karate kid” posture also carried a message for the women to balance activities, skills and work-life balance a little better.
The crew of 50 were then led by Eliza Tan, from LegisComm, in a “personal branding” workshop, where they designed for themselves self-made T-shirts to embrace their unique identity. The midday session was delivered by Lisa Theng, managing partner at Colin Ng & Partners, who shared her own inspirational story with the audience. She encouraged the group to pursue their passion, be it legal or not, as time waits for no-one.

The SCCA had also arranged for a diverse and dynamic panel of C-suite ladies to share their experiences. The panel included: Noor Quek, CEO and founderof NQ International (Singapore); Marina Chin, joint managing partner and co-head of disputes at TKQP; Catherine Hall, general manager marine at Shell Chemicals; Khim Loh, managing director at The Moving Visuals Co; and moderator Jasmine Karimi, senior director and counsel at Illumina Inc.
The event ended with chatting and cocktails while watching a fiery sunset against the nautical backdrop of the Singapore marina. What a day!
