The government has notified the Plastic Waste Management Amendment Rules, 2021, prohibiting single-use plastic items by 2022. The rules are aimed at reducing waste caused by single-use plastic items, which have become a significant environmental challenge.
The manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale and use of single-use plastic, including polystyrene and expanded polystyrene, shall be prohibited with effect from 1 July 2022.
The definition of single-use plastic includes earbuds with plastic sticks, plastic sticks for balloons, plastic flags, candy sticks, ice-cream sticks, polystyrene for decoration, plates, cups, glasses, cutlery, straws, trays, wrapping or packing films around sweet boxes, invitation cards, cigarette packets, and plastic or PVC banners.
