I agree with Mr. Popham’s view expressed in your May issue (Indian lawyers: The world awaits you) that Indian law firms should internationalize their practices and that there is a need to increase the number of Indian corporate lawyers with international legal experience.
However, Mr. Popham is also making an important, nuanced, subtle and additional point when he says: “No international firm can viably create a law business in India by relying upon expatriate staffing, paying for rented accommodation, flights, and other expenses to serve temporary moves across continents. To succeed, such firms will have to recruit local, Indian-qualified lawyers to meet economic demands.”
