Hemant Sahai Associates has rebranded with the aim of creating an institutionalized practice. The firm, now known as HSA Advocates, turned to Mumbai-based designer Kanchana Sawant to create a logo that would reflect its new professional look.
Navin Syiem, a partner at HSA said the firm’s partners wanted to steer clear of a brand that looked too futuristic or contained too many sharp edges, so instead went for a conservative approach. The new logo is the firm’s initials in large black and gold lettering accompanied by the old firm name, Hemant Sahai Associates, in small letters below.
Speaking to India Business Law Journal, Syiem said that the firm will eventually drop the old name and use only the new HSA logo. “We had an attorney’s workshop session and several brainstorming exercises,” said Syiem. “We looked at where the firm is at and where the firm should go in the next three to five years and as part of that process, we unveiled the logo. We want to move away from being just a firm named after an individual, to becoming an institution.”

In addition to an aesthetic makeover, HSA is also expanding its capabilities. Meenakshi Arora, a litigator, and Anjan Gupta, a finance specialist, joined the firm’s partnership last month. The appointments follow the lateral hires of Syiem from Ashurst in Dubai and Souvik Ganguly from AZB & Partners.
Arora, who has 26 years of litigation experience in the Supreme Court and various high courts, will be based in Delhi.
Gupta was hired from Herbert Smith’s London office where he was a senior associate in its banking and finance practice. He previously worked with Ogilvy Renault (now Norton Rose) in Toronto and has also worked at Trilegal. Gupta will be based in HSA’s Mumbai office.
Arora and Gupta have both worked closely with HSA in the past. “Meenakshi has been an of counsel for us for many years,” said Syiem. “She does a lot of tax litigation and that will complement us and our clients. We’ve tried to expand our banking practice and finance offerings with new clients and Anjan’s international experience coupled with mine could help further strengthen not only our practice, but also our management systems.”
