Baker McKenzie has advised Spain-based RIU Hotels and Resorts on its expansion into Thailand through the development and opening of its first hotel in Phuket.
Riu Palace Phuket is a five-star hotel with 504 rooms on the beachfront on the north-west coast of Mai Khao. The property is near the Sirinat National Park and 16 kilometres from Phuket International Airport.
Baker McKenzie advised RIU Hotels and Resorts on the land acquisition, development and operational requirements necessary to develop the hotel. The firm also supported the hotel chain in liaising with relevant government authorities and other stakeholders throughout the project.
Bangkok-based partner Preeda Meksrisuwan led the team, which also included senior associate Chana Sooppipat and associate Puriwat Chaisiriroj.
RIU Hotels and Resorts is one of Spain’s leading hospitality groups, operating hotels and resorts across Europe, the Americas, Africa and Asia. Baker McKenzie said the Phuket property formed part of the company’s international expansion strategy.
